Cómpeta is a beautiful, typically Spanish, white village set in the breathtaking mountain range of the Sierra Almijara, and is a hidden gem located just 55 kilometres from Malaga.

During your stay in Cómpeta, as "tranquilo" as it may seem, you will find many things to do.

It is almost obvious,  due to the landscape , that the main attraction of Cómpeta is walking! Whether it be a steady stroll through the natural parks or a hike up Mount Maroma, the mountains surrounding Cómpeta offer around 25 different routes to enjoy, all varying in difficulty.

The various trails lead to some of the surrounding white washed villages of the Axarquía region, all of which are equally interesting.  Each of the neighbouring villages offer many local traditions, statues and monuments tell tales of past times and the Spanish, Mediterranean food found all around is divine, with each place offering their own local speciality… This brings me back to Cómpeta; The home of the moscatel grape, and obviously the home of the famous "Vino de Cómpeta" (Cómpeta wine). Enjoy cold, either sweet or dry, as an aperitif or an after dinner digestive. And in true Spanish style, every year on the 15th of August Cómpeta celebrates the "Night of the Wine" or Noche del Vino. The festivities start in Plaza Vendimia (a small square just off the main square) where the local tradition of treading the grapes can be seen whilst listening to the "fandangos de Cómpeta"! Celebrations continue all throughout the day until the night when,  in the main square, Plaza Almijara, there are performances from local artists, flamenco singers and dancers and poets on an Andalucian Cortijo style stage set up in the middle of the plaza.

Another of Cómpeta's  amazing celebrations is Semana Santa, or Easter week, which is definitely worth a visit. The beauty of Easter come to life in the form of huge statues which leave the church and are paraded around the narrow streets of Cómpeta with pride,  returning after their journey to the church,  having been blessed and adored by the whole village.

But despite its extravagant festivals, the surrounding areas of Cómpeta offer the peace and tranquility of nature which can also be enjoyed, not just by walking… because if putting on a pair of hiking boots isn't on your agenda then why not enjoy the trails in a 4x4! Various tour guides in the area off a different nature experience in their 4x4 jeeps! They guide you around the Sierra Almijara and share with you their  vast knowledge about the plants and trees which are  unique to the Axarquía region and explain about the wildlife that thrives in our mountains. They also offer kayaking trips, canyoning, caving, biking and much more!

And if all of this is still not how you wish to discover the mountains then why not try on horseback! With a few different stables offering a variety  trails and experiences, now there is no excuse not to get out there and enjoy the amazing surroundings and beautiful nature and views Cómpeta has to share!

Cómpeta has so much to offer and is the perfect location for a "relaxing by the pool" holiday, an adventure holiday or a trip full of culture and exploration. It's a fantastic base from which to explore some of  Andalucía's large cities  all of which are all within 1, 2, or 3 hours drive. Malaga being the closest, just 1 hour away, Granada and the famous Alhambra Palace is not much further, and the historic Catholic city of Sevilla is just 3 hours drive, and every one will provide an enchanting experience.

The local restaurants, bars and cafes all serve diverse, delicious and traditional food, offering lots of variety  and fantastic local dishes. All of which can be accompanied by weekly weekend live music performances throughout the summer months. Everything from tribute groups, soul and jazz singers, local musicians and the ever popular flamenco performances provide entertainment for everyone!

Additionally, every year Cómpeta hosts their annually "Feria de Verano" which usually falls around the weekend of July 25th. Each year the Competeñans enjoy the 4 day fiesta with fairground rides, live music (with the occasional performance from a famous face), dancing and the fun of the foam party held on  Saturday afternoon! This party is enjoyed by the whole family,  bubbles fill the main square and a DJ plays music throughout the day, whilst everyone dances! Sunday then hosts the "Romeria" when Cómpeta is filled with beautiful Andalucian horses parading  through the village in procession with their riders dressed in their finest traditional flamenco dresses and the men and boys dressed in traditional suits. The Cómpeta Feria is a great weekend to be enjoyed by the whole family.

With so much to do and see, Cómpeta really is a fantastic place to rent a holiday villa with pool in Spain to enjoy walks, hikes, cycling, horse riding and all of the local fiestas, there really is something for everyone!

We look forward to welcoming you to Cómpeta soon!
