Cómpeta is a white village in the Axarqia
region of eastern Andalucia.It is located on the
edge of the National Park at the foot of the Sierra Almijara
mountains. Maroma, the highest peak of the Sierra Almijara,
stands majestically in the distance.
The region attracts visitors who come to enjoy a range
of outdoor activities, active and not so active. Many
people paint, draw, walk, hike, bike, treck or just
relax and lay by the pool.
In addition to the scenery, flora and fauna the region
is also famous for its local wine. The inhabitants
of each of the neighbouring villages will tell you that
their particular variety is far superior to that of
any other village, the only way to prove the theory
is to taste!
The village has a long history dating back to and beyond
the time when the Moors ruled the land. Over the years
Cómpeta has comfortably adapted to modern-day
living.
Nowadays the village offers an extensive range of restaurants,
bars, shops and supermarkets. There are banks, schools,
B&Bs, an Hotel, churches, pharmacies and internet
cafes.
Many nationalities live in the village and the surrounding
countryside, however, Cómpeta maintains its
Spanish identity and the majority of the local population
are Spaniards. Málaga is the closest international
airport and is approximately a one-hour drive from the
village. The beaches along the coast can be reached
within 25 minutes.
